Pick the drain cleaning service by where the clog is. One slow fixture needs a branch clearing; several fixtures backing up at the basement floor drain needs the main line cleared from the cleanout. Cable machines restore flow quickly; hydro jetting scours grease and root fines; a camera shows the cause. In Calgary communities built in the 1950s to 1970s, insist on the camera.
- Describe symptoms precisely when you book; the right machine and technician depend on branch versus main.
- A cable machine opens a path; a jetter cleans the pipe wall. Neither tells you why it blocked. The camera does.
- In the City's 1960s/1970s community class, about three in four City-side service lines are coded TIL (generally clay tile); your private side may be similar or different.
- A good visit ends with a flow test, footage, distances and a written cause, not just an invoice.
- Clearing a blockage does not need a City permit; repairs and replacements do. Ask who does the repair work.

01 /What kind of drain cleaning do you actually need?
Start with the symptom, because it tells you where the clog is and therefore which service to book. A company that sends a technician with a small drum machine for a main-line backup, or a truck-mounted jetter for a bathroom sink, has either misunderstood the call or is overselling it.
| What you notice | Likely location | Service to ask for | Typical equipment |
|---|---|---|---|
| One sink or tub slow, everything else fine | Trap or branch drain | Branch drain clearing | Hand or small drum auger |
| Kitchen sink slow again weeks after clearing | Grease in the kitchen branch | Branch clearing plus jetting | Drum machine, small jetter |
| Toilet and tub gurgle together; floor drain wet after laundry | Building drain or main | Main line clearing from the cleanout | Sectional or large drum machine |
| Floor drain backs up every few months | Recurring restriction in the main | Main line clearing plus camera | Machine, push camera, locator |
| Roots cut last year, symptoms back | Roots at joints in the service line | Root cutting plus camera, or jetting | Root cutter head, jetter |
| Old house, never scoped, buying or finishing the basement | Unknown condition | Camera inspection (clean first if needed) | Push camera, locator |
If you are not sure whether the problem is one fixture or the whole line, run two fixtures at once and watch the basement floor drain. Water appearing there points to the main. That test, and the rest of the symptom list, is in the Calgary main line clog guide.
02 /Is a cable machine or hydro jetting better for Calgary lines?
They do different jobs. A cable machine (auger or snake) spins a steel cable with a cutting head through the clog, punching a path and cutting roots. It is fast, works through most blockages and suits a first visit. Hydro jetting drives water at high pressure out of a nozzle; its backward-facing jets pull the hose up the line and scrub the pipe wall, washing grease, sludge and fine root hairs toward the main.
For many Calgary houses the sensible sequence is cable to restore flow, camera to see the cause, then jetting only if the footage shows grease, sludge or a root carpet on a pipe sound enough to take it. Jetting an old clay tile line blind is how a clearing turns into a repair.
03 /Why does the camera matter more in older Calgary communities?
Because the likely pipe material changes with the era of the community, and older materials fail in ways a cable cannot fix. The City publishes the material of the City-owned portion of every residential sanitary service line. In HAUSE's analysis of that data, the communities the City classifies as 1960s/1970s have 77.5 percent of City-side lines coded TIL, the City's tile code, generally read as clay tile. The 1950s class is more mixed, with 23.1 percent TIL and 18.5 percent cast iron. In the 2000s class, 95.7 percent are PVC.
Two caveats matter every time. The data covers only the City's portion, from the main to the property line. Your private portion, from the property line to the house, can be a different material and age, especially if a previous owner replaced it. Still, if the City side on your street is clay tile from 1972, it is reasonable to expect jointed pipe on your side too until a camera shows otherwise.
Jointed clay and old cast iron respond to cleaning differently from PVC. Clay joints let roots back in on a cycle. Cast iron scales and can hold a clog on its rough wall. The camera tells the technician which one you have and whether the cleaning plan should be a one-off, a schedule, or a repair conversation. For community-level numbers, see CalgarySewers.ca.

04 /What should a good Calgary drain cleaning visit include?
A complete visit restores flow, proves it, and tells you why it happened. Use this list to judge the work, whoever does it.
- Questions before tools
Which fixtures, since when, any rain, previous cleanings, backwater valve, age of house. A technician who asks nothing is guessing.
- Floor and access protection
Drop cloths, a plan for water at the cleanout, and care around finished basements.
- Cleanout access, not a toilet pull, where possible
The main cleanout gives the straightest shot to the main. Toilet pulls and roof access are fallbacks when there is no usable cleanout.
- Respect for the backwater valve
Where a valve is fitted, the technician should work through its access cover as designed, not force a cable through the flap.
- Clearing to the main
Run the cable or jetter all the way to the City main, not just far enough to drain the floor.
- Flow test
Run several fixtures together while watching the floor drain.
- Camera run with distances
Footage-counter distances to any roots, cracks, offsets or sags, and a locate mark at the ground surface over any defect.
- Written findings and video
A plain summary of the cause, the recommended interval, and a copy of the footage for your records.
Clearing a drainage blockage does not need a City of Calgary plumbing permit. Replacing sewer lines does, and repair work is regulated plumbing that in Alberta falls under the compulsory Plumber trade. If a cleaning visit turns into a repair recommendation, ask who would do the repair and under what permit.
05 /How do you compare Calgary drain cleaning companies?
Compare evidence and scope, not adjectives. Search results for drain cleaning in Calgary will show dozens of companies with similar claims. The best one for your job is the one that will clear the line, prove it with video, and tell you honestly whether you need anything else.
- City of Calgary business licence, which the City requires for plumbers and other specialty trade contractors, verifiable through the City's Licensed Trade Contractor search.
- A WCB-Alberta clearance letter and a certificate of liability insurance.
- A clear price structure: call-out, hourly or flat rate, what is included, and the after-hours premium.
- Camera included or offered as a named add-on, with the video handed over.
- Willingness to tell you when the problem is on the City side and to give you footage for 311.
- Written estimates for any repair, with the method and length stated.
The full checklist, including prepaid contracting licences and red flags, is in how to vet a Calgary drain contractor.
06 /What does drain cleaning cost in Calgary?
Price depends on access, length, the machine needed, the time of day and whether a camera is included. The Calgary planning ranges for branch clearing, main line clearing, jetting, root cutting, camera work and after-hours calls are on one page: Calgary drain and sewer service call costs. When you are ready to compare local options, request quotes and include the symptom, the cleanout location and your community.
FAQQuestions people ask
Do I need a plumber or a drain cleaning company?
For clearing a blockage, a drain cleaning company is often enough, and the City does not require a permit to remove a blockage in drainage. For repairs or replacement, you need certified plumbing work under a permit; ask whether the company has a journeyperson plumber for that.
Is hydro jetting safe for old Calgary sewer lines?
It can be, on pipe that is sound enough, and it cleans grease and root fines better than a cable. On cracked clay or badly deteriorated pipe it can make things worse. Get a camera look first on older lines.
How often should a Calgary sewer line be cleaned?
There is no single interval. PVC lines with no history may never need scheduled cleaning. Clay tile lines with roots often need attention every one to two years. Let camera findings and your own backup history set the schedule.
What should I get in writing after drain cleaning?
The cause found, the distance to any defect, whether it is before or past the property line, the recommended next service, and a copy of the camera video.
Why did the drain company recommend replacing my line?
Usually because the camera showed something cleaning cannot fix, such as a collapse, a large sag, or roots through many joints. Ask for the footage and distances, confirm which side of the property line the defect is on, and get a second opinion before any major work.
