Short answer

After a 311 sewer backup call, you can check the request's status through the 311 app, online or by calling 311. A City Water Services crew that visits snakes from your cleanout to the main to find which side the blockage is on, then leaves a Customer Service Report. If the blockage is private, the City advises calling a plumber, even when its snake cleared it.

Key takeaways
  • Your 311 request is the update channel for your address: check it in the app, online or by phone, and keep the reference number.
  • The crew asks for written permission before removing an obstruction or a stuck cleanout cap; you may give or refuse it.
  • Expect to run water with the crew after the snake, and to receive a copy of the Customer Service Report.
  • A private-side finding means a plumber next, even if the City's diagnostic snake got water moving.
  • If the backup returns, go back to 311 with the old reference and new evidence rather than starting from scratch.

01 /How do you get an update on a City of Calgary sewer backup request?

Check the status of your own service request. The City of Calgary says that after 311 routes a request to the right department, you can check its status through the 311 app, online, or by calling 311. The phone line takes calls at any hour; the City lists a callback service that runs from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., seven days a week. From outside Calgary the number is 403-268-CITY (2489).

Write the reference number where everyone in the house can find it. You will need it for the follow-up call, for your insurer, and for any contractor who later finds something near the property line. If a backup affects a whole street, several households will each have their own request; mention in yours that neighbours are affected, with their addresses if you know them.

02 /What will the City crew ask you to do during the visit?

The City of Calgary's Water Services customer guide for sewage backups says crews are available every day of the year for the initial investigation of sewer emergencies, and it asks the customer to take an active part in the visit. Beyond clearing access to the cleanout, which the sewer backup guide covers, expect the following.

  1. Stay with the crew. The guide asks the customer to direct the crew to the cleanout and to remain present during the assessment.
  2. Give or refuse written permission. If an obstruction has to be removed to reach the cleanout, or the crew cannot open the cleanout cap, it asks for written permission first. The guide is explicit that the customer may give permission or not; refusing may limit what the crew can diagnose.
  3. Watch the snake go in. The crew runs a steel snake from your cleanout to the sewer main to find whether the blockage is on private or public property.
  4. Run water when asked. Afterwards you will be asked to run water to confirm the obstruction is gone, possibly more than once.
  5. Have a plastic bag handy. The guide notes the crew may ask for one to remove organic waste found inside the service.
  6. Take the report. You receive a copy of the Customer Service Report, with information about your next steps.

If the cleanout cannot be found in the floor, the guide says the crew may be able to work from a stack, which may be behind drywall; it is the customer's job to locate and expose it, and clearing from a stack is not always possible. It also asks that nothing, including a toilet, be placed over the cleanout or floor drain.

03 /What does the Customer Service Report tell you?

The Customer Service Report is your written record of what the City crew did and what it advises next. The City's guide says you receive a copy and that it gives information for your future course of action. Treat it as the anchor document for everything that follows.

Before the crew leaves, read it with them and make sure you understand four things. If anything is unclear, ask while they are still there; it is much harder to reconstruct later.

  • Which side of the property line the crew found the blockage on, or whether it found none.
  • Whether the snake restored flow, and whether water ran freely during the test.
  • What the crew advises: a plumber, a follow-up by the City, or nothing further.
  • The date and time, which you will match against photos and your insurer's claim.

Photograph the report as soon as you have it and keep the paper copy with your 311 reference. The exact layout may change over time; what matters is the finding and the advice.

04 /What happens next, depending on what the crew found?

The next step follows directly from the finding. The table sets out the usual paths; your report and 311 have the final word on your case.

Next steps by City crew finding (general pattern; follow the advice on your report)
FindingWhat it usually meansYour next move
Blockage on private propertyThe problem is between your house and the property lineHire a drain contractor; ask for a camera run with distances

Blockage on public propertyThe problem is in the City's service pipe or mainLet the City handle its portion; keep your reference and report

05 /Why does the City still say to call a plumber after its snake cleared the line?

Because a diagnostic snake answers where, not why. The City's guide notes that the crew's diagnostic test may clear a full or partial blockage on your side, and that Water Services still advises calling a plumber. A steel snake pushed through a blockage usually punches a hole through it; the roots, grease, wipes or broken section that caused it are still there.

Left alone, the same restriction tends to rebuild, often at the worst time: a holiday dinner, a houseful of guests, or a storm. A drain contractor can clear the full diameter of the pipe, run a camera to find the cause, and give you distances and a written finding. On an older Calgary line, especially clay tile or cast iron, that camera run is the part you will be glad of later.

If the camera shows the cause is roots, tree roots in Calgary sewer lines explains the options, including what you may and may not do about a City tree.

06 /What if the backup comes back after the City's visit?

Go back through the same channel with more evidence, not less. A returning backup is information: it narrows down the cause and, sometimes, the side of the property line.

  1. Stop water use and protect people

The same first steps apply every time; check for electrical hazards before anyone goes into the wet area.

  2. Call 311 again and quote the old reference

Say when the first backup happened, what the Customer Service Report said, and what has changed since, including weather and any contractor work.

  3. Bring contractor evidence if you have it

Camera footage, the footage-counter distance to the problem, and the locate mark's position relative to the property line are the details that let 311 route the request correctly.

  4. Note the pattern

Only in heavy rain, only after laundry, or at random? Rain-linked backups on several properties point to the main; use-linked backups in one house point to your line.

Where the evidence puts the problem at or past the property line, the City or Owner triage tool explains why the result may be shared and what 311 will want to see. The City makes the final determination on its side.

07 /How do you keep one record for 311, your insurer and your contractor?

Keep a single folder, paper or digital, and put every document from the backup in it. The same few items answer nearly every question the City, an insurer or a contractor will ask.

  • The 311 reference number, and the date and time of each call.
  • A photo of the Customer Service Report and the paper copy.
  • Photos and videos of the backup, taken before cleanup started.
  • Contractor invoices, camera footage and written findings with distances.
  • Your insurer's claim number and the adjuster's name.
  • A one-page timeline in your own words, written the same day.

If you need to work out what the whole event is likely to cost, what a sewer backup costs in Calgary breaks the bill into its layers. When you are ready for private-side work, request local quotes and attach the report's finding.

FAQQuestions people ask

How do I check the status of my 311 sewer request in Calgary?

Use the 311 app, the City's online 311 service, or call 311 with your reference number. The City says you can check the status of any request it has routed to a department through any of those three channels.

What is a Customer Service Report from City of Calgary Water Services?

It is the written record a Water Services crew gives you after a sewer backup visit, according to the City's customer guide. It records what the crew found and gives information for your next steps. Keep it with your 311 reference.

Can I refuse to let the City crew remove my cleanout cap?

Yes. The City's guide says the crew asks for written permission to remove an obstruction or the cleanout cap, and that the customer may give permission or not. Refusing may mean the crew cannot finish its diagnosis.

The City crew cleared my line. Do I still need a plumber?

The City's guide says Water Services still advises calling a plumber when its diagnostic snake clears a blockage on your side. The snake opens a path; the cause is usually still in the pipe and needs clearing and a camera run.

Why did the City crew ask me for a plastic bag?

The City's customer guide says crews may request a plastic bag to remove organic waste found inside the service line during the visit. Having one ready saves a search.

Is there an online update for a sewer backup on my street?

For your own address, the status of your 311 request is the update. For a problem affecting several homes, call 311 and say that neighbours are affected, so the request is routed as a possible City-side issue.
