Short answer

Call for help tonight if sewage keeps rising with all water off, water is near electrical equipment, you smell gas, sewage is entering a room where people sleep, or you cannot stop water use in the building. Call 911 for immediate danger, 311 for anything involving the street, a manhole or several homes, and a drain contractor for a private-side blockage you cannot hold until morning.

Key takeaways
  • Most private backups stop getting worse the moment everyone stops using water, which buys you until business hours.
  • 911 is for immediate danger; 311 takes City sewer reports around the clock; contractors handle private lines.
  • Ask for the after-hours rate, the minimum charge and what is included before anyone is dispatched.
  • In condos and rentals, the first call is usually the property manager or landlord, not a contractor.
  • The morning after, get the camera footage that explains the night; otherwise you pay for the same emergency again.

01 /What counts as a sewer emergency at night in Calgary?

A sewer problem is an emergency when it is getting worse on its own, threatens health or safety, or cannot be contained by stopping water use. If none of those is true, it is urgent but it can usually wait for daytime rates and a better-equipped visit.

Calgary's 311 accepts requests 24 hours a day by phone, the Calgary 311 app and online. If you are unsure whether the City's sewer is involved, call; the agent's job is to sort that question.

02 /How do you hold the house until morning?

Stop all water use, contain what is already out, and keep the basement ventilated and closed off. A household that commits to zero water use for eight hours can usually get through the night without further damage from a private blockage.

  1. Declare the drains closed

Tell everyone, tape a note over the toilets and sinks, and switch off the dishwasher and washing machine at the controls. Guests and teenagers are the usual cause of a second overflow at 2 a.m.

  2. Plan for the toilet

Arrange a neighbour's bathroom, a nearby 24-hour business, or a camping toilet with bags. It sounds unpleasant; it is far less unpleasant than a second backup.

  3. Contain and lift

Move valuables, boxes and electronics off the basement floor if you can do it without stepping in sewage. Do not use a household vacuum or shop vac on sewage unless it is rated for wet use and plugged into a safe, dry, GFCI-protected outlet.

  4. Ventilate carefully

Close the basement door to keep odour and moisture from the rest of the house. Open a basement window if it is safe. Do not run fans plugged into outlets near the water.

  5. Keep the furnace area in mind

If water is near the furnace or water heater, keep people away and ask your gas utility or an HVAC technician what to do. Do not relight or reset appliances that have been wet.

03 /911, 311 or a contractor: who handles what?

Each number solves a different problem, and calling the right one first saves time.

  • 911: immediate danger to people. Fire, gas, electrical hazard, someone overcome by fumes or injured.
  • 311: the City's side. Sewage in the street or a manhole, several homes backing up, water rising with your water off, a problem a contractor has traced past your property line. From outside Calgary, 403-268-CITY (2489).
  • Drain contractor: a private-side blockage in your building drain or service line. The City's published split makes the property line to the house the homeowner's portion.
  • Property manager or landlord: shared lines in condos and rentals, and any building where you do not control the plumbing.
  • Insurer or broker: once people are safe. Many insurers run 24-hour claim lines and can dispatch restoration crews.

If the City attends overnight, the crew snakes from your cleanout toward the main to work out which side of the property line the blockage is on, and it needs clear access of about two metres around the cleanout. The daytime version of this sequence is set out in what to do in a Calgary sewer backup.

04 /What does an after-hours sewer call cost in Calgary?

Expect a premium. As a 2026 planning estimate, Calgary drain contractors commonly add roughly $100 to $300 to a call, or charge 1.25 to 2 times their daytime rate, for evenings, weekends, holidays and deep-cold nights. A daytime main-line clearing from an accessible cleanout typically quotes about $200 to $450 before GST, so a night visit can plausibly land well above that.

Four questions keep a night call reasonable:

  1. What is the after-hours call-out charge, and what does it include (first hour, first clearing attempt)?
  2. What is the rate after the included time, and is there a minimum?
  3. Is a camera run included tonight, or can I book it at daytime rates tomorrow?
  4. If you cannot clear it tonight, what do I pay for the attempt?

Often the best-value night call is a clearing to restore flow, followed by a daytime camera inspection and any repair quote. The full Calgary price table is on the service call cost page.

05 /What changes in condos, rentals and basement suites?

In shared buildings the first call is to whoever controls the plumbing. Condo corporations usually own the common stacks and building drain, and many have an emergency contractor on standing instruction; calling your own company can create a bill the corporation may not reimburse. Tenants should call the landlord or property manager first unless people are in danger.

Basement suites deserve special care at night. The suite's fixtures are usually the lowest in the house, so the suite floods first even when its occupants used no water. The upstairs household has to stop water use completely, and the suite occupants may need somewhere else to sleep if sewage has reached their living space. Landlords should know where the cleanout is and have a contractor's after-hours number posted before it is needed. How suite bathrooms back up, and how they should be protected, is covered in basement toilet and shower backups.

If the building is commercial or has several units on one line, commercial drain cleaning in Calgary covers who calls whom. Residential condo owners and tenants will find the call order and the chargeback rules in condo and townhouse sewer backups.

06 /What should you ask the contractor on the phone?

Describe the problem in terms the dispatcher can plan around, then confirm the basics before the truck rolls.

  • Which drain is overflowing, and whether it stops when water use stops.
  • Where the cleanout is, and whether it is accessible or buried under flooring.
  • Whether you have a backwater valve; the technician should open its access rather than force a cable through the flap.
  • Whether a City crew has already attended, and what it found.
  • Your community and house age, which hints at pipe material and access.
  • Whether the company holds a City of Calgary business licence and can provide a WCB-Alberta clearance and liability insurance certificate.

Vetting at 2 a.m. is hard, which is why it pays to shortlist a contractor in daylight. How to vet a Calgary drain contractor sets out the checks.

07 /What should happen the morning after?

Find out why it happened. A night clearing restores flow but rarely explains the cause. Book a camera inspection, ask for the footage-counter distance to any defect, and run the result through the City or Owner triage tool. Call your insurer if you have not already, keep every invoice and photo, and add the cause to your maintenance plan so the next emergency is less likely. If you want a daytime contractor lined up, request a quote.

FAQQuestions people ask

Is 311 open at night in Calgary?

Yes. The City says 311 takes requests 24 hours a day, seven days a week, by phone, the Calgary 311 app and online. From outside Calgary, call 403-268-CITY (2489).

Should I call 911 for a sewer backup?

Only if there is immediate danger: a gas smell, water near live electrical equipment, fire, or someone overcome by fumes or injured. Otherwise call 311 for City-side concerns or a drain contractor for your own line.

Can I wait until morning to deal with a backup?

Often, yes, if the water stopped rising once everyone stopped using water, nothing electrical is wet, and people can sleep away from the affected area. If water keeps rising with everything off, call 311 tonight.

Why are after-hours sewer calls so expensive?

Night and holiday calls pay a technician outside normal shifts, often in deep cold, and tie up a truck that could have done daytime work. Ask for the call-out charge, the hourly rate and the minimum before dispatch.

Who do I call for a sewer emergency in a Calgary condo?

Your property manager or the corporation's emergency line first, unless people are in danger. The corporation usually owns shared stacks and the building drain and may have a contractor on standing instruction.
